Program Design
I most enjoy designing programs. Most recently, we won a grant from the City of Santa Fe for an artisanal entrepreneurship training program that I designed with a colleague. The program consists of interactive workshops on market driven product development and creative marketing strategies, with a component of bringing wholesale buyers directly to producers in a variety of ways to establish viable linkages.
My consulting work consists of project design and strategic planning, assessments, project start-up, proposal writing, developing training and workshop programs, and market linkages.
I am particularly interested in alternative rural livelihoods and women's entrepreneurship. Rural farmers often spend a good portion of the year not farming. Both women and men have other skills that go completely unnoticed as possible sources for alternative incomes.
One example is this village forger and farmer, below. When not cultivating, he makes hoes, shovels, knives, plow parts and other recycled metal farm tools. We slightly refined his hoes and knives and led him to viable tourist markets and vendors. In the village a hoe would sell for 50 cents, to tourist and export markets he could earned ten times that much and he continued to make tools for his community.
Hidden opportunities abound, no one would have guessed that a simple hoe could become a marketable product and lead to significant alternative income.

My approach is creative and pro-active: to identify often hidden possibilities, transform weaknesses into strengths and create as many viable business to business links as possible along the entire value chain.
